Furnace basics
Confirm the thermostat is in heat mode and set above room temperature. Check its batteries, the furnace breaker, and whether the filter is severely restricted. Make sure exterior intake and exhaust openings are not blocked by snow.
Do not remove panels or bypass switches. If you smell gas, leave and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe place.
Maintenance
Check a one-inch filter monthly during heavy use. Replacement timing varies with filter type, household activity, pets, renovations, and runtime.
A filter with a higher rating is not automatically better. Excessive resistance can reduce airflow.
Winter comfort
Humidity that feels comfortable in mild weather may cause window condensation during a cold snap. Lower the setting as outdoor temperatures fall and treat persistent condensation as a warning.
Cooling
Cooling equipment should match the home’s estimated load. An oversized unit may cycle often and provide less moisture removal. Windows, insulation, orientation, internal loads, and ductwork should be considered.
Heat pumps
Capacity and efficiency change as outdoor temperature falls. Edmonton installations need a clear low-temperature and backup-heat plan. Ask how controls choose between heat sources.
Estimates
Ask what was diagnosed, what is included, who obtains permits where required, how warranty service works, and how replacement capacity was selected.
